Supporting your Child: Irish-medium Education and Special Education Needs
Gaeloideachas is delighted to be able to add to the range of supports available to parents and guardians of children with special education needs. We have recently published a bilingual booklet under the title of Supporting Your Child; Irish-medium Education and Special Education Needs. This booklet was put together in collaboration with the National Council for Special Education and it was specifically created for parents who already have children in the Irish-medium education system or those who are considering availing of its educational opportunities for their child.
The booklet contains information on some of the following topics:
• Supporting pre-school children
• Choosing a school for your child with SEN
• Supporting children in school
• Support for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired
We are sure that people will find the practical information in this booklet very useful. Among the other resources that we are currently working on, and that will be ready very soon, there is a new leaflet with FAQs about dyslexia and a big collection of resources in Irish provided by AslAm. They will be made available on the special webpage of our website dedicated to additional needs education www.gaeloideachas.ie/oideachas-speisialta/
In addition to this, we are really looking forward to organising further online workshops and seminars on this very important area in the new year. We plan to organise two workshops for primary and for secondary level teachers on the subject of dyslexia in Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools, and how to effectively help students in this regard. Furthermore, it is planned to have a seminar especially for parents on the topic of autism in March.
